Screen Resolution Issue

Posted by Dan Kermac at Aug 21, 2009 11:39 PM
Tested Tux Math as Jan said it wouldn't open.
It opened ok & i was able to play the games, but when i exited the application, the desktop was showing at a VERY low resolution.
Tried to open Display Manager to change the screen res, but Display Manager wouldn't open properly.
Selected *Shut Down* to restart, The system hung for a fair while & then just shut down without giving me an option to restart.

Screen Resolution Issue

I think a video driver issue. I dont have the prob with the dev machine i am using.

Devices

Posted by Dan Kermac at Aug 22, 2009 12:42 AM
When i opened the game "blinken" I got a pop up saying "KDE detected that one or more internal sound devices were removed. Do you want KDE to permanently forget about these devices?"
The device was the intel 8280 Audio controller.
I checked the installed hardware via terminal and saw that the device was picked up.

Devices - KDE

Posted by kylie at Aug 22, 2009 02:07 AM
Yes this is the KDE audio system asking questions or telling us stuff. I guess we can disable these messages.

I think KDE stuff is a lot of overhead. The apps are slow to start for the first one (loading all the kde libs). Some - eg potato guy pizza theme - are very slow!

Yes. We should probably drop this. I can't find a help package for it. Have not googled to see if this is a known issue.

Media Players

Posted by Dan Kermac at Aug 22, 2009 03:00 AM
Just downloaded a song using Transmission which worked fine.
Double clicked the track which opened movie player by default. Movie Player appeared then closed after a couple of seconds.
Same thing happened with Rhythembox, however the second time i opened the file with rhythembox it worked ok.

Can you let us know the URL of the song or where it came from so we can do further testing?

I'm very interested in finding web media that doesn't work. Let me know if you come across any other sites.

Vodafone Wireless Mobile Connect

This will only work successfully if you have the USB device plugged in. It probes for the device on start up - if it aint there - it won't start.

Perhaps we need a tool tip advising people of such.

Help not opening

Adobe Reader 9

Posted by Dan Kermac at Aug 22, 2009 03:17 AM
Will not open anything that needs to connect to the net (online help, Knowledge base etc..). Is this a security issue or a bug?

Adobe Reader 9

Posted by kylie at Aug 26, 2009 09:21 AM
Fixed and thanks for finding this Dan.

Solution is to change the library location for libgtkembedmoz.so to /usr/lib/thunderbird

Also make sure you put in /usr/bin/firefox for Browser executable.

Works on master.

adjusting internal speaker volume

Posted by Peter Baker at Aug 22, 2009 06:18 AM
I have speakers connected to my headphone jack via an amp. every time I turn up the volume via the "pcm" volume slider in "volume control" the internal speaker would also play louder, making the sound "tinny"

fixed by going to "volume control prefs", selecting "master mono" and then muting "master mono" in "volume control"

adjusting internal speaker volume

Posted by kylie at Aug 22, 2009 10:27 PM
Having PCM up all the way with small computer speakers, some headphones, internal computer speakers - will make things sound tinny. On any system.

Unfortunately - sound system - has to be configured by users. So if we build systems at cbv with an internal mono speaker - we will set the sound system for that.

If user then puts headphones in, or speakers (via the jack) - the user then needs to adjust their mixer settings. If the user uses an external amp - again the mixer settings need to be adjusted.

Perhaps we need a how to or something in the user guide that lets users know about this.

right mouse click sensativity

usability preferences

Posted by Peter Baker at Aug 22, 2009 06:55 AM
here are some things that ain't broke but I think could add to the novice experience...

adding shortcut to "computer" on desktop

using brasero instead of k3b as cd burning application. easier to use

adding "update manager" to panel.

usability preferences

Posted by kylie at Aug 22, 2009 10:47 PM
A nice clean desktop with less things loading makes for a quicker initial experience. We want our computers to feel fast and snappy.

Computer is easy to get to via Places. If people want a link to Computer - they can create one. :)

Most folks at CBV think Brasero is limited in comparison with K3B. K3B has menu options and right click options for most actions people might like to do with CD/DVD burning and ripping (up to 18 things). Brasero only seems to have 5 or 6 things it can do (if you count erase files).

We would need to test Brasero more. How does it handle multisession disks, can it erase a DVDRW, how about ripping? It does look nice and easy to use and integrates better with the desktop because it is a gtk app.

K3b is very similar to Brasero and is easy to use - indeed they both use obvious buttons and have signposts all over the place advising users what to do (re drag and drop files into your project type stuff).

K3B help has some great 'Quick Guides' with lots of pictures, Brasero has help but no pictures (probably needs to).

On update manager - I'm not sure about that - I'm concerned that dial up and mobile bband users might have to download lots of updates.

I'll also be disabling distro updates - unless users know what they are doing - they could break their system. During a distro upgrade some questions will be asked. The wrong answer can make or break the system.

I think we need to test these things and write guides for our users.

9.04 C'Bank

Posted by Bill Boledziuk at Aug 25, 2009 08:23 AM
Congratulations Kylie,
This is a Huge improvement in usability for Linux novices. Tried on 2 machines with similar config to our shop. Impressed that it auto loaded ATI 3D vid drivers. No big sound or Vid play problems found .
Technical issue with wireless network I haven't resolved..Madwifi is there but not working for me yet.
Wireless Broadband worked after enabling the Vodaphone dashboard and editing the config in network mgr, however Std 9.04 has this already enabled so a non tech user can do it.
Addit. minor points are - good to keep the shutdown button in the top right corner of taskbar.
Periodic table Applic appears in both EDUC & GAMES
Agree with principle of keeping menu's simple to start as exper. users will find the addit Applications anyway. Of course there will be more issues as we go along but already great.

My thoughts FWIW

Posted by Mahyar at Aug 31, 2009 08:52 AM
A splash screen would be nice so you know it's not hanging.

There appears to be a bookmark in FF for a Netgear modem (I didn't connect to the internet), but no others.

The definition of 'free software' in one of the explanatory files contradicts the definition on the website.

The contents of the Downloads folder are weird, but might just be for testing purposes. All that stuff could go in the Examples folder. And who's Marilyn the podiatrist?

There are many duplicate K applications when the GNOME ones are just fine. Do we really need KMahjongg and Mahjongg? KMines and Mines? KCalc and Calculator? Why's there a KDE login screen? The GNOME and KDE menus together present an inconsistent look and feel. Personally, I think there are too many (K) apps if this is the default install.

What is the purpose of having an AMD64 .iso? Is that just for testing?

In Frozen Bubble, when you shoot and 'disappear' a group of balls, they should fall to the bottom of the frame. Currently, they just vanish into nothing. And I've replicated Barrie's invisible pointer problem.

There is no easy way to shut down. Is the fast user switch applet there or did I miss it? I must've missed it in my haste.

XGalaga froze for me, causing me to restart X.

When enabling advanced desktop effects (right click on desktop>Change Desktop Background>Visual Effects>Extra, I get the error message "Failed to execute child process 'compiz' (no such file or directory)". Instead, you should get a message saying "Desktop effects could not be enabled". Also, the Help file in that same window does not launch.

Language support is not installed completely. I don't know if this is intentional.

I could not launch Wireless Assistant, which is probably another K app.

My CD drive is not launching with the eject command, but this could be my set-up. Having said that, it has never not worked before.

On a minor note, Picasa is repeatedly misspelt in one of the explanatory files, and JPEGs open in Firefox, which is awkward. F-Spot or gThumb would be better in my view. Also, I would prefer removal of the top desktop panel, with consolidation of the contents of the two. People might be more comfortable as it would look more like that other OS with the menu in the bottom left.

That's about it. Sorry if you've already addressed these. I hope I haven't been too pedantic.

Mahyar

Oh dear...it seems you have our old distro and maybe one that has someones data on it. ?

Could you please bring this back next time you are in. What date does your /etc/issue file have?

Our old system is a KDE system with Gnome installed but no tweaks. Yes GNOME is misconfigured in many ways.

My thoughts FWIW

My /etc/issue contains 'Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS \n \l' and was last modified on the 29th of June.

Yes that is an older version of our current KDE distro. We have it dated 07/08/09 now.

Laptop bugs

Posted by Mark Starling at Sep 02, 2009 06:18 AM
Laptop running Intel hardware (915GM/GMS/910GML, ICH6) battery monitor doesn't update, even on plugging/unplugging power pack. This was a problem for me on Ubuntu 8.x but fixed on 9.04.

Would also be good to have the location default to Melbourne, if nobody has noticed that yet.

I can't connect to a password-protected samba share via GUI (seems to be same on standard Ubuntu).

Five points after editing the user guide in 9.04 ~ Jan

Posted by jan at Sep 03, 2009 04:51 AM
Notes on Ubuntu 9.04 Kernal Linux 2.6.24-23generic(i686) Gnome 2.26.1

1. Older kernel? Is this deliberate- I think I heard it mentioned somewhere by someone. In http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/904overview it says Ubuntu 9.04 includes the 2.6.28-11.37 whereas we have 2.6.24-23generic(i686)

2. Saving Files. Files automatically save to /tmp - it might be more intuitive for people if they automatically saved in My Documents. Saw volunteer having problems with this last weekend.

3. Passwords. Changed the password in system/aboutme then tried to change it back to Computerbanks cbvuser password. Was told it was too simple and wouldn't let me. I had to change the password back via System/Administration/Users and Groups - this area didn't mind the simple cbvuser password.

4. GCompris Admin. In System/Administration/GCompris Administration most icons do not open. Clicking on the House removes all icons. There seemed to be no way to access the configuration area.

5. Screensaver. Suggest as the screensaver we use the Floating Ubuntu Screensaver to reinforce we like Ubuntu :)

Five points after editing the user guide in 9.04 ~ Jan

Posted by kylie at Sep 03, 2009 08:35 AM
Hi,

Good comments.

Kernel - yes we need to change this.
Saving files - interesting i thought they were going to Downloads or if default set up to Desktop. This is firefox?

Interesting ...files you dont save - but look at or access go in /tmp - maybe that is the confusion. Or maybe I am confused and you will need to show me.

If you right click and do a save as - what is the folder?

On Passwords - there might be a switch that allows simple passwords somewhere in the system config.

Gcompris - will investigate further.

Screensaver... at the moment it is the default one - the lampshade but can be changed.

Enhancement

Add package "gnome-games-extra-data"
This adds "themes" for games, in particular "same-gnome", making it look much better.
Extra graphics for card games, 'mahjongg' etc.

Audacious

Yes I completely removed it. I wasn't sure about it at first (it is in the default jaunty install) - but it is gone!

File Downloads

Posted by Dan Kermac at Sep 05, 2009 02:34 AM
Have been testing file downloads, in particular WHERE they dl to by default. Jan adv that some files have been downloading to /tmp, but i did not encounter this issue.

Found that if you right click > save file as, you will be asked where to save the file (desktop by default).
If you just click "Download", it will save to the downloads folder without asking.

Had problems opening/playing a lot of these files once downloaded, prob files listed below:

.au
.avi
.mp3
.mpeg
.mov
.ra (.ram)
.swf

These problem files would not play either directly in browser or from the system once DL'd

Rebooted the system and all audio files played fine (!?)
But Mplayer will not play ANY of the files (audio or video)
VLC plays all video fine of course.

File Downloads

Posted by Dan Kermac at Sep 05, 2009 02:50 AM
I should add that Mplayer also seems to be the default application when opening most of these files. Mplayer will sit there for a bit trying to open the file, then crash and disappear.

OO Writer

Download Folder

Posted by Dan Kermac at Sep 05, 2009 02:55 AM
Regarding the Download Folder (/user/downloads), if a lot of files are downloading to this folder by default, I suggest it (the download folder) be added to the "Places" menu & maybe to the Nautilus sidebar.

Themes

Posted by Dan Kermac at Sep 05, 2009 03:01 AM
I've noticed that some of the really nice looking new 9.04 themes are missing. Is there a reason for this. I know some of our customers aren't going to even look at the different themes available, but some will & there are some really nice ones now (new wave in particular)

Posted by kylie at Sep 08, 2009 05:37 AM
