Coordinators Report for August 09
General News
Not as many computers out the door this month so spread the word, hang some posters, give out our flyers.
Three computers went to Newstead Rural Transaction Centre courtesy of Dave Hall. We know of a Karen Burmese group getting serious about Linux as they have some video editing training scheduled and have expressed an interest in volunteering with us.
We had a building scare this month - it nearly caught fire! Lucky someone was around to notice the smell and was able to do something about it.
Great donations from Mason Sier Turnbull Lawyers and the Port of Melbourne Corporation, we now have more LCD screens than CRT ones. Yay! We have also received equipment from regulars such as Grocon, Rose Partners, and Mecu as well as many individuals. The warehouse is very full!
After nearly 9 years of running projects (starting in 2001 with 25 participants) in partnership with Kangan Batman TAFE our work for the dole program ended on August 20th. Over the years work for the dole has contributed a significant amount - in terms of people power, work outputs and subsidised operational costs. There has also been some fantastic outcomes for many of the participants involved, some have even been employed by us.
Software Freedom Day is on this weekend. Consider going along or doing something else to support the day and spread the good word. See http://softwarefreedomday.org/melb for details.
